A varactor diode there makes even less sense. They probably needed a 270 V
zener as protection against excessive voltage at that location and there
was no single zener that was 270 and adequate power. C603 and the other
component upstream of it limit the current.

Good solution! The only concern would be if the photosensor device doesn't
switch (mostly) on or off cleanly.

I suppose you've already checked to see if there were any broken circuit
traces under the IC.
That would've been my first suspicion where a circuit board crack was
present.
With a small high intensity light (like a 1W LED), it's often possible to
see things on a pcb that normally wouldn't be seen.

I see some potential problems. If any of the components contain a
ferrous metal, then inductive heating would be a problem. Also, iron,
if memory serves has a problem with oxidization. I wonder how they
bond the iron with the other elements to avoid this. maybe it needs
to have conformal coating. What's the price tag going to be for the

Maybe they found two zeners that would split the voltage fine, which
would be cheaper, and forgot to update the parts list.

Hey there, could somebody take a quick look at this circuit and try to
explain me what's the purpose of the 2 zeners near the interrogative point ?
Here's the schematic: [link]
If they are working as voltage stabilizer, shouldn't there be a resistor
between them and the rectifier??
