Lets see here, the football program pays for the entire athletic budget, is looking to revamp the stadium, is in the top 20 (at least for now) in all time wins, and this guy still doesn't get it:
Turner, somewhat defiant in his remarks to reporters in a conference call Tuesday, said he would never say that winning is not important, "but the message that our students hear, that our coaches hear, that our leadership hears from the general run-of-the-mill fan is that 'The only thing we really care about is how many games they win.'
"And I have to look at that after 32 years of doing this and say, 'Wow, is that really what we are all about? Have I been that naive all this period of time? I have been spending all my time on the student- athlete experience and trying to create better lives for people and the proper place in higher education when all I should have been worrying about is how many games we've won.' Why didn't I go to the NFL if that's all it's about?"

Since he was on the 'job for less than three years, it seems pretty hard to lump all the blame on him. Good luck finding a *proven* AD who wants to work with a seemingly trigger-happy President and a controversial stadium renovation project.

The simple fact is that the boosterism for the school is global--the guy who donates a couple grand to the athletic department will likely also donate a couple grand to the department he graduated from, which isn't the case elsewhere. The big Tyee boosters also have their names on plaques and wings in the academic buildings.
There is a synergy created between football and academics, and if an AD thinks that a high grad rate or GPA trumps an abysmal W/L record, he needs to re-evaluate.

Actually, that is the case increasingly at many places.

There is absolutely no reason why a university can't be successful at both athletics and academics. Especially one of the caliber of Washington.
Jon Enslin <jens...@charter.net> woke up and had to finish this by hand:

They are doing one and not the other, which is exactly why the AD "resigned".

He was only given 2 and a half years. That really isn't much time.

Wow, what a moron.
What is it with UDub and athletic directors lately? That Barbara Hedges was a real clueless wiener too.

Alums and fans pay HUGE money for tickets primarily because they are most concerned with providing scholarship athletes with a good student-athlete experience.
Right?

They might be able to convince Mike Lude to come out of retirement.
