Subject: Another Little Update
What's up everybody? Still won't be doing no mixtapes for a little
while but I didn't want to leave this space empty. So here's a little
remix that I was goofin around with in the summer time. It's a remix
to Skee-Lo's "I Wish". Everybody knows that joint. Anyways, I made my
own beat, tried it out and I thought it worked alright. It actually
makes the song sound depressing now! Great for the winter weather.
Anyways, excuse the timing of the beat and the raps. They don't mesh
that well and that's I cause don't have time to spend more than 5 mins
doing this sort of stuff. Blame it on the A-D-D. Enjoy.

kool!
you're into this new remixing thing like me!
Nice one!

I don't know what to say really because it works
i suppose i could give some constructive pointers from the threadbare
knowledge i've gained (im only on my 6 th remix).

Firstly, dude you picked a hard acapella.
The original skee-lo song is all summerry and nice,
you slapped a big dark hip hop beat behind it,
I like the beat but maybe with another darker acapella
in the same bpm..?

Mix..panning...alot of the instruments/samples etc seem
to be dead centre in the mix, usually you put the Bass-kick
and vocals in the middle, and spread the others either side
sometimes with mashup you have no choice because the
insrumental you use has evrything fixed and you cant
 play with them.

Eq-delay... sometimes using delay eq ,and panning
you can really seperate hi hats, by making them ping at the extreme
right and left while cutting all the mids, low end.

also eq out all the highs on the kick and bass, then compress
those suckers till they shake the room. that warm thud can be created
by
using a very low pitch sine wav that matchs the
rythem of your kicks.

i could go on....but , really i'm a beginner.
what's your setup by the way?
mpc? software, how did you do the mix?

I had problem with your recording right away.  what bitrate did you
record it at?  It sounded all squelchy and archived.  For real...
start with a 192 or better mp3... 128 at least if you don't want high
quality versions floating around.

Now for construct...

the acapella wasn't syching with the beat.  Even if you are going for
an off-tempo remix - there has to be some sort ofconsistency... and
the acapella was bouncy around way too much.

If it doesn't fit... make it work.  Great thing about editing software
is that you can chop that bitch up line by line and put each line on a
different track - and nudge it until it works.....  not like straight
mixing where you have to rely on source material.  It's time
consuming... and I'm only now getting to the point that I spend 1/2
hour or so tweaking on subtle nuances... but the moral is:  if you put
time into it - the results will show the work and effort.

I always checked out your mixes BTW... and now that I'm in this mix
blog biz... I know how important feedback can be.

I'll try to listen and comment whenever you post shit.

Thanks man.  Yeah the sound quality was really bad but that's because
all I did was have Fruity Loops playing the beat and then have the
accapella mp3 playing in winamp at the same time!  If I actually
export the beat then the distortion sound isn't there anymore.

Doing the above mentioned method is also the reason why the acappella
is mistimed.  I am thinking of actually doing good versions of these
remixes but that would take me longer than the 5 minutes this
literally took to get it together.

Which editing software program are you using btw?

Thanks for the comments!  My setup is a bootleg copy of Fruity Loops
version 3 to sequence the beat and put some effects on the samples,
and I also use sound forge to edit the samples and cut them up.
That's all I use.  It's taken me about 5 years of self teaching and
only using it once in a while to get the hang of it and have myself
efficiently using the program.  I'm too use to FL to change over to
any other program anymore.

If you got any remixes, you should put them up on here.  It'd be cool
to check them out.  Like Tim (The Ranger) I'm into the homemade music
nowadays for some reason.  So I'll check it out for sure.
