Whutevah... Language is an artform, not a hard science, and misunderstandings happen all the time. It still seems to me that: "Mainstream media is a biased corporate commmercial conglomerate owned and operated by the very hedgemony that is embarrased by the Silence on the 4th..." and "Whoever posted this seems bent on defining rainbow gatherings as organized events held by a group which is distinct from the public, rather than freeform peaceable assemblies of the public; the former being a licensed privilege under the Permit Regulation and the latter being the enjoyment of the vested right of the people peaceably to assemble." which was the main point I was trying to make and which Gary snipped. I believe thinking people in general are relying less and less on biased corporate media as thier source of truth all the time, and the gatherings of the tribes are happenings not "events" hosted by any one tribe...
BB, fair's fair, if you are going to correct my grammar why don’t-cha tell Gary to proof read his sometimes unintelligible typing. %~\

I’ve always been of the opinion that people are free to bring their cameras and the like as long as they ask those whose pictures are to be taken have given their permission. I would feel the same way toward a recorder of any kind. I’m in favor of folks using their camcorders to document the unlawful activity of the Leos and have maintained that it would be a wise practice in such an event to have someone filming the person filming the activity as a precaution against further abuse of power. But inviting the media into the gathering is a whole other matter. It brings a commercial enterprise into the natural setting of the gathering and IMHO pollutes the wholeness of its purpose. How that’s seen as negativity on my part is beyond me, but then again maybe I don’t know the purpose of the gathering anymore.

well, the scolding happened a long time ago and things have change. maybe Rainbow was more Puritan back then and i'm just still feeling the residual residue of the past.

it still seems strange to me that media and all it's attendent Babylonian technology would be welcomed at a Gathering. i took a small tape recorder to a Gathering once to catch and keep some sounds, nothing in partcular, you understand, just the sounds of a Gathering, the drums, the I LOVE YOUs, the laughter, snatches of cosmic conversation and such. someone saw me with it and all hell broke lose. i had like 5 or 6 people scolding me for bringing in bad vibes and stealing energy from the Gathering. you'd think i was stealing souls or something. i never brought so much as a disposable camera to a Gathering again. now there's cameras everwhere and satellite pick up for cell phones. **shrug** with satellite
************************************************************************* During my first Gathering in '72 I got the distinct impression that cameras were not allowed per some "rule". In '73, I took a photog friend of mine and kept telling him there was a "rule", and that "cameras were not allowed". But being a total (and excellent, btw) photographer, he wouldn't dream of going anywhere without a camera. He did fine, and pointed out others with cameras there. Fast forward to recent years and I went through some initial surprise seeing photos and video everywhere. Now, I'm used to it. Things change.

I think an organized group of self selected volunteers to do media is a great idea. I have worked with many activist groups who use press releases and do media outreach and it is a very wise idea to have some knowledge of how these things work. A well written press release will bring media, if it is on a slow news day or fits into a "community" type column. I also think that whatever any rainbow chooses to do or say to make things better at gatherings is their personal responsibility and business. If some gatherer does or says things that bring problems, then it is any ones responsibility and personal business to try to correct the problem. Any one can do it, everyone may do it, and no one can stop them, cause no one is in charge! The media outreach is a good idea, but would be best kept to specific media, imho. Democracy now has been contacted and that is one media group I would welcome. Same for indymedia of various sorts. When it comes to CNN, FOX, ABC, etc...well, they probably won't send a reporter or camera crew, and all the better they don't. It is way to easy to take isolated bad behavior from some gatherers and make out like that is the sum total of everything. It would be best to have media accompanied by rainbows with lots of experience, who can explain what is seen. It is also vital, imo, to remind everyone, esp. first time visitors, about the fact that a gathering has much less crime than a city of the same population, and yet that since anyone may come, you get a bit of the darker side of life as well as the living light. Rainbows include all the colors in the spectrum, hence our accurate name. Peace and healing cannot easily occur when hostile forces surround, interfere with and discourage it. But we try. We do try to make a place where light may live, where peace prevails and where healing is our purpose and our outcome. I think if peace will ever be possible, it is from practice sessions like rainbow gatherings that seeds are planted, tended and harvested. Let there be peace on earth and in our gatherings. Love freely, live peacefully, Fragilethunder

It is also vital, imo, to remind everyone, esp. first time visitors, about the fact that a gathering has much less crime than a city of the same population,
<snip>
************************************************************************* Is this a typo or did you mean to state it thus? I don't think this is correct. Some Gatherings are what - 2000? 5000? folks? Even if 10 or 20K like the old days, that's still a pretty small city in Babylon. In cities/towns that size everybody pretty much knows everybody and crime rates are generally really, really low.

My only editorial comment is I would say: "any individual" instead of "any rainbow" because of the confusion in colloquial understanding, even among gatherers, of what a "rainbow" is; what it means to be a rainbow. Only a small percentage of gatherers belong to The Rainbow Family of the Living Light tribe, many call themselves rainbows, a lot of people gather thinking all there is to the gathering is a big party in the woods which is not true at all, etc.
